The makers of Hamster Kombat, the viral Telegram-based tap-to-earn game, said Tuesday that the game has attracted 300 million players to date. That’s nearly one-third of the 950 million active users on the popular messaging app, per a recent announcement.
Hamster Kombat’s anonymous team shared the stat in a new whitepaper released Tuesday, which details plans for the allocation of the game’s upcoming token launch on The Open Network (TON). The launch was planned for July, but earlier announcements on Monday suggested that the airdrop is still in the planning stages.
Hamster Kombat has seen enormous growth in recent weeks. Telegram CEO Pavel Durov said on July 5 that the game had attracted 239 million players by that point, and the game’s team put the sum at 250 million just days later.
The 300 million player tally is an incredible amount for any game. Major free-to-play games like Fortnite and Roblox are estimated to each have more than 200 million monthly active players, for example. Hamster Kombat’s total is an all-time mark, however, plus it only takes a few seconds to hop into the Telegram mini app to start playing.
The simple tap-to-earn crypto exchange simulator has racked up that enormous player total ahead of the planned HMSTR token launch on TON. The developers are following the mold from Notcoin, the original Telegram tap-to-earn game that launched its NOT token to millions of players earlier this year, reaching a peak market cap of nearly $3 billion.
While the whitepaper does not detail a launch date for the token, it does offer some details about how the token supply will be allocated. Unlike Notcoin, however, Hamster Kombat’s team won’t be releasing all of the tokens at once—or offering them all up to players.
According to the team, 60% of the HMSTR tokens will be allocated to players in the airdrop, with the remaining tally “reserved for providing market liquidity, ecosystem partnerships and grants, rewarding squads, and other items.”
As noted in that statement, Hamster Kombat plans to expand its ecosystem in time and onboard other developers, including via grants. The game will also launch a “squads” feature to encourage players to collaborate, and will also debut “time-limited events” with special rewards. There will also be a “Season 2” campaign with further crypto rewards.
